caravalWelcome to our July Read Rave Rant book introduction post! We are happy to have you here and hope you enjoy this online reading club!

For July, we will be turning the pages of Stephanie Garber’s debut book Caraval!

Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away.sg

A fun note – Bethanie, the library’s Programming and Outreach Manager, and I had the privilege of meeting Stephanie Garber at a library conference this year. She is a fantastic person and very fun to interact with. Be sure to follow her on social media. We were told she reads every comment, even if she doesn’t respond to them all.

We’ll be discussing this book starting July 7th and finish it up by the end of July. Every Saturday, we will make a new blog post about our thoughts and a few questions about what happened in the chapters that we read that week.

Here’s the rundown:

  • Read Chapters 1 – 8 (up to the Eve of Caraval) to prepare for our first discussion on the 7th. We can continue to talk about these chapters during the following week to give you time to catch up if you’ve got other stuff going on.
  • Read chapters 9 – 21 (through Caraval day 3) and we’ll discuss starting July 14th
  • Read chapters 22 – 34 (through Caraval day 4) and we’ll discuss starting the 21st
  • Read chapters 35 – Epilogue (Caraval day 5 to end) and we’ll discuss starting the 28th

The July Read Rave Rants count towards our Teen Summer Reading Program! You can earn an extra prize per book that you participate in the discussion for (don’t forget to log that you read the book too). If you are not yet registered for our SRP, you can do so here. Don’t forget to claim your prize at the end of the month for participating! Email Elizabeth, the Teen Librarian and the one who will be facilitating the discussions, at engelman@bsblibrary.org and she’ll send you an email back proving you participated. Prize must be picked up at the library building (or Annex).rrr

Summary taken from Goodreads.com

laceeLacee is the Marketing Specialist and Outreach Coordinator. She can most often be found hiding behind her desk in the office corner, on the library’s social media pages or out in the community doing outreach. She is a MASSIVE fangirl of Elizabeth Hunter (seriously, most staff members can tell you massive is probably an understatement) and loves the Harry Potter series, the Hunger Games trilogy, the Caraval books, and the Red Queen series. Nine times out of ten she can be found reading a YA novel and enjoys most genres. When she’s not working, Lacee enjoys writing and reading, crafting, photography, binge watching TV shows (right now mostly k-dramas and variety shows), listening to music (her favorite is kpop), vacationing at the beach, cuddling up with her fur babies and husband, but mostly sleeping.
