By Laura Kraus, Youth Services Librarian
Welcome to Read Rant Rave! This program is currently for teens ONLY and will take place entirely on this blog – that’s right, you don’t even have to step foot in the library – well, except to grab yourself a copy of the current book.
Here’s how it works:
When we finish one book, we’ll pick another to start reading. Each week, you’ll be given a designated amount of chapters to read. At the end of the week, we’ll post a discussion post where you can rant or rave about what we read that week.
For example, week one we will read chapters 1-10. On Saturday, you log in here to find our post for the designated reading. After reading the initial post, take to the comments and tell us what you thought.
Pretty simple, right?
There are two ways you can participate. You can comment with an original post about what you love/hate about the book, what surprised you in the chapters, or anything that stood out to you. If you read someone else’s comment and it falls in line with what you think or you disagree, you can comment on theirs instead of creating your own. Make sure whatever you post is backed up with examples from what you read in the book–mention specific scenes, directly quote a line/scene, etc.
Be nice, even if you don’t agree.
If you read ahead (for example you read through chapter 12 for the first week instead of just to chapter 10), don’t share content from the chapters we haven’t read that week. Week one should only be content from chapters 1-10. Week two chapters 11-21, etc.
We may jump in the discussion to guide it, but own it and make it a worthy, thoughtful endeavor. Who knows, you might make some new friends out of it!
See you in the discussions!
Laura is the BSBL Youth Librarian and can most often be found at her desk if she’s not doing a program. Her favorite books are Pete the Cat, The Egypt Game, and Elephant and Piggie. Her favorite authors are Neil Gaiman, Amy Krouse Rosenthal, Jane Yolen, and Cynthia Rylant. Her favorite library related things are all the fun #bookface posts! Outside of work, Laura enjoys hanging out with her son at the zoo, park, or library, knitting, drawing graphic novels, making jewelry, cross stitch, sewing, and writing, but she is usually reading chapter books, graphic novels, and some YA! She loves nature (especially birds) and creative reuse.
